In Joseph Conrad’s passage from Heart of Darkness, the narrator, Marlow, uses colorful language to help readers understand his view of nature. “ The air was warm, thick heavy, sluggish. There was no joy in the brilliance of sunshine.” These few sentences can help the reader easily understand what the surroundings are like and what the narrator feels through the negative words he uses such as, “warm,” and “sluggish. Not only does the author of this passage give us a clear view of what Marlow is seeing and by the detailed language, but he also uses diction and figurative language to express the attitude of Marlow.

Personification is one type of figurative language that Conrad uses to really give readers a clear image of the darkness of the surrounding plant life. At one point Marlow describes how the nature he is surrounded by brings back memories from the past and says that, “It looked at you with a vengeful aspect…” This personification does not bring a sense of tranquility or joy, rather , it’s an unnerving sentence that gives a very different view of nature than what is usually portrayed in most stories. The entire landscape as a whole seems to be haunting. It seems to be the hunter and Marlow the prey.

Conrad also uses similes to show what Marlow feels during his trek inside the maze of thick foliage. He starts by describing the vast amount of tall trees that are, “…hugging the bank against the stream, crept the little begrimed steamboat, like a sluggish beetle crawling on the floor of a lofty portico.” He goes on to say that, “ It made you feel very small, very lost…” Although he describes the boat being like a beetle, he starts describe how he feels as though he also is the beetle. This is not altogether a bad thing because small creatures can easily pass by without much harm done to them. While feeling lost and small he says, “ yet it was not altogether depressing, that feeling.”

Beowulf 1118

From my view I think the reason why the Geats choose to burn the treasures is because to give some back to the dragon. Since the dragon had it first and just to respect it. Also, because Beowulf told them to burn the treasures.

Destroying  and same time  honoring the wealth of the king (Beowulf) is by cremating him and putting him the tower with the treasures.  That mostly how the Geats honor their King ( Beowulf).

There are a number of posts on this blog, and today you need to read a few of them. As you read, you need to find one post that you agree with, and one that you disagree with. For the post with which you disagree, you need to post a comment on the blog; in this comment write a paragraph that explains what you disagree with and why, and what change could be made to the post that would make you agree with it. With the post that you agree with, you need to post a comment in which you state why you agree and make a statement that could possibly strengthen the paragraph (in many ways this is more difficult than disagreeing). Be sure to put your four digit code on your comments, or else you will not be given credit, and try to look for the thoughtful responses.

1721

The writers each have different opinions, but both stories state that you should speak out for your opinion no matter what.Dick schaap, describes the life of Muhammad Ali as a young boxer with little experience, who later grew up into a very interesting person with an important opinion. The boxer's personality changes over this period of time as well as mature. Ernest Hemingway describes writers during WWII, who are being subjected to a strict writing mold that these writers are expected to follow. He disagrees with this idea and states that each writer needs to write about what they want to write about.
These opinions are important to all writers. Writers need to write about what they want to write about because they can not show their full potential if they do not write about one of their own opinions.

1627

I think schaap’s opinion is saying that Muhammad Ali is famous as others like presidents. Both the president and Muhammad Ali have changed in many ways, but they still remain the same thing. Ali has been a self- prideful guy and trust him self that he would be the champion, and knows it. His confidential idea has been in his mind every time. This is what makes him cocky. He always wants to be victorious. Ali has matured through his career of boxing, but he still has the personality of being a winner and his confidence is still alive.

But it is not the only thing that is going on in his life when the writer talks about Ali. There are different things going on the society. Ali have not become to be a person who has changed him self completely. But partially, he has things in a society that he is a part of that let him made him to be a more matured person. This doesn’t mean that he has quit thing that he used to do, but growing, and remains the same.

The importance of this opinion might be the growth process of peoples in a different period of times. Ali was very prideful when he begins boxing and throughout his every boxing, he still is self- confident. When things get newer and fixed, you try to match up with that. Ali has put things aside that has to be change, he might need to do that, but it doesn’t mean he is new, he just has changed, the personality of Ali is still there with him self. You might be get push to remain your self to change, not to make your self another. All things around you in a society make people to go through a many different ways, you don’t just hold on to one or two things forever.

1732

HIs opinion in writing about Mohummad Ali is that Ali really was a good guy but he turned into a bad guy because people were racist in his time. They were rude to him and his people and therefore he reacted by becoming the Ali we know now. He was innocent but he hated racism. So Dick pointed out. that because the white people were racist he had to be someone else in order to not be hurt by that. His view was important because it shows us how it was back then and how hard it was to be an innocent person like how Mohummad was back then, how he needed to change.

1727

Dick Shaap’s opinion in “Muhammad Ali: Then and Now”, is that society has the ability to change a person, and in Ali’s case, for the worst. He started out as a brilliant young man, respectful and maybe even a bit naïve. However, as he began to grow and develop, he was influenced by the circumstances in the world, especially from the issue of racism in America. His point-of-view is basically that society can make a person turn out to be someone they’re not. For example, Ali began to involve himself with major people and organizations such as the Black Muslims and Malcolm X. Yet he was the same person inside.

His view is important because he shows that though Ali is more upfront about his views on racism, he still acts like how he did when he was a beginner boxer. Nothing has changed inside of him, but because society forced him, he had to change and be a little rougher on the outside. Schaap’s opinion is that the issues of the world and especially the conditions that was in the 60’s greatly influenced a person’s character, especially Muhammad Ali’s.

Schaap speaks of Muhammad Ali's attempts to try and adjust and change in the world he's plunged into unknowingly, which seemed feeble in the end. Which can be understandable, he was just a normal kid who happened to be a good fighter. It seems you have to grow up in that to really know how to act. It seems Schaap was witnessing something like a lifelong housecoat being forced to live outside, unbeknownst to the dangers and reality of it all.
Although through the course of his life Muhammad's beliefs and ideas changed and blossomed, he still was like a kid. His mannerisms, confidence, arrogance, all parts of him which would never change, and never will. As Schaap put it, he is "so different, but still the same."

1724

Dick Schaap has the opinion that people and history do change over time, but share some similar characteristics like before. He shows this through Muhammad Ali who changed his motivation of becoming a top champ, and moved on to support the civil rights movement through his professional career to end segregation in the US.
This message is important and relevant since America has drastically changed since the time of Muhammad Ali, but some things of legacy still remain over the two score years that have passed. We see it's relevance in the fact that we have an African American president, yet still have some racial discrimination toward minorities like the event of immigration green cards or other loop holes that are constitutional to still discriminate. This would still show that attitude that Muhammad was fighting against way back in the 60s occurring still to this day.

1723

The opinion of the writer of “Muhammad Ali Then and Now” is how Ali became to be. He thinks that Ali is a great guy and is nice. His attitude changes in the ring, but if you really get to know him, he will be a good friend. He saw Ali grow from an 18 year old to be a Heavy Weight Champion. His appearance and reputation have changed, but his personality stayed the same.

The opinion is important because the writer has his point of view on Ali, and anyone can have the same point of view.

Well the author is saying that Muhammad Ali has changed in so many major ways but in the small ways he is the same. I guess that is like the world.  We try to change it in major ways but in the small ways it is exactly the same.  No matter how much we try to change the world it will always stay the same.  When you look at the bigger picture it is different but if you took a closer look at it, the world is the same.  Muhammad tried to gain success and make his life better but ended up with more problems, just as the world tries to be at peace but ends up getting into more wars because of it.

1734

In the easy Muhammad Ali Then and Now by Dick Scrap is about Muhammad’s life and how he changes over time but he is still that same person he used Ali as an expel of how when he first met him he was use to the life of the slums and poorer end of Americans.  As time went on he changed and adapted to the life of the rich.  He learned all the tricks and how he didn’t really care the value of money as he use.  But all along he was still the same old kid that started boxing.  His outward side of home changed but inside he was still the same old Ali

His opinion at the time was very important because the society at the time was very much like Ali.  They where changing the people the racism and rights where changing.  But deep down inside American was still the same even with the law’s they made and how they said they where the home of the free and land of the brave.  It was just a fake act to cover up who we are on the inside.

1631

In “Muhammad Ali Then and Now,” Dick Schaap describes Ali as a young man who has a lot of confidence and acts pretty cocky. In the beginning of the essay, Schaap writes about how Ali is a some-what innocent, clear minded guy who gives his all to be the best that he can be. His actions are compared to that of a little child by his innocence and his chivalry. Throughout the essay, slight changes in his personality and in him altogether, begin to show or are just obvious. Basically, Schaap just writes about a cocky, young man who grows up, matures, and does things that he thought he would never do.

His main opinion is how Ali had changed almost everything about himself and yet he was still the same. This is important because it basically shows how people in general are when they begin to grow up and mature. It’s sort of how if you had a best friend when you were little, you moved away, and then you came back ten years later and saw them. They are practically still the same, yet they’re so different. SO in the essay, we got a first hand experience of seeing how this boy was when he left Kentucky and how he molded into the man he came to be.

1628

In his essay “Muhammad Ali Then and Now,” Dick Schaap shares his opinions on legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. Dick was good friends with Muhammad Ali, he knew him well. In his essay he  is trying to say that there is more to people than what meets the eye.  He is saying that Muhammad Ali was two faced.  The Muhammad that his friends knew was not the same person that that public knew him to be.  Although he changed his name and his religion, he never really changed as a person.  His opinion is important because it does not only apply to Muhammad, but too American society as a whole.

1634

In the essay “Muhammad Ali  Then and Now,” is Dick Schaap who personally knew Muhammad Ali, has a very personal opinion about Ali. His opinion is that even though Muhammad Ali went through a lot and experienced so much he never really changed as a person. Not matter how much he accomplished he was still Cassius Clay at heart. He can change his religion and his name but he is still the same guy. Dick Schaap states, “He is so different now. He is so much the same.” Through time he never changed on the inside.

The author’s opinion matters because it teaches us the lesson that no matter how far you go in life that you can always stay true to yourself. You can grow as a person but staying true to who you are in life matters the most because you mature and grow into a better person.

1640

“Muhammad Ali then and now” by Dick Schaap tells the tale of the great Ali and puts his opinions in but lknot in depth. EB White says that you need to include more of your opinions rather that just telling about his life. It’s a writers duty to include his opinion if not, its not an essay. All Dick does is tell about Ali and his life, he doesn’t have much of his opinion in it. EB White is the real writer, he knows it all.

1636

1632

The story by E.B.White was telling all writers, that they should write to how the feel, and write down their opinions.  The story on Muhammad Ali was focusing on his appearance as a person, not what he was really like.  According to White, it should have been what the writer thought, and not what he was visualizing.  A quote White had said was, “A true writer always plays to an audience of one,” this is a quote that all writers should consider within their writings.

I really believe this is important because it is.

“Mohammed Ali Then and Now” by Dick Schaap is an essay written about the infamous fighter from the writers point of view. According to E.B. White writers need to incorporate their opinion in their various works. By giving his opinion on Ali’s choices, Schaap fulfilled his duty as a writer. Throughout the essay Schaap gives his opinion about Ali’s choices and actions, such as his friendship with Malcolm Little. In the Essay Schaap makes it clear that he thinks highly of the champion.

1633

I think the main point of Dick Schaap's article about Muhammad Ali was to show that he was a morally right person. Schaap may have not agreed with the choice Ali made to turn his back on Malcom X, but for the most part Shaap felt that Ali was someone people could look up to. That is not the only time that Shaap makes clear his opinion on Ali. The article may not have clearly stated what Shaap thought, but his thoughts and opinions were implied all throughout.
Just the fact that Ali was an aspiring boxer gave the impression that he was pro violence. I wouldnt expect a professional boxer to be as comical and sincere as Ali was. Which I think was Shaap's main reason behind writing the article-to show people the other side of Ali. He was a figure that their kids could look up to.

In the essay “Ali now and then” the author knows that he hasn’t changed but then again he wants to change  few details to let the readers know that he has changed in a way. Cassuis hasn’t changed in his view although in society he has changed. In the E.B White essay he says that people change but then they are still there in reality. These opinions are used to understand what the writer is trying to say about the protagonist. But  then again they can become the dynamic character. So it just depends…

1623

1625

Dick Schaap’s opinion on “Mohammad Ali Then and Now” is showing how much Mohammad Ali changed and was still the same. The author noticed that everything appears the same as it was before and yet he also sees a lot of different things going on He saw and noticed t that Mohammad Ali changed a lot from being boyish in the beginning of the essay to being a man by the end of the essay. He also wrote the deferent presidents that existed. Despite the fact that Mohammad Ali grew the author also mentioned how Mohammad Ali was still the same person he was long ago.

1622

In Dick Schaap’s essay, “Muhammad Ali Then and Now,” Schaap writes about his experience and thoughts of Muhammad Ali. At the end of Schaap’s essay, he says that Ali has changed yet he’s still the same person. Schappy believes Muhammad has become famous and well known, yet he’s still the same morally good person he’s always been. Muhammad may have changed his name, become a tremendous athlete and become one of the world’s best boxers, but he’s still the fun, hard working, well mannered man he’s always been. Schaap knew Muhammad Ali since the beginning and knows how he’s changed and how he’s still the same. Schaap still believes Muhammad Ali is still a good man.

Schaap’s opinion on Muhammad Ali is important because Schaap has known Ali since the beginning of his professional career and knows how Ali has changed and how he’s still the same. Many people may believe that Ali is just another cocky boxer that beats up people for a living, while others may believe he’s a role model and someone they may look up to. Schaap’s opinion and essay may change the way many people think of Ali. Ali may have changed a lot of things in his life, but Schaap talks about and expresses his opinion that Ali is still the same guy he was before all the fame and fortune came his way. Schaap’s essay and opinion is very important because they can change the way other people view Muhammad Ali.

1635

The writer’s opinion of Muhammad Ali is not only that he changes along with the circumstances and situations around him but also that he stays very much the same person throughout it all. As Muhammad Ali experiences the rise to fame and all that comes with it he certainly is expected to become a different person, more acceptable to the society around him. So he puts on a mask. He changes every detail about himself to become a different person. His name becomes Muhammad. His religion follows suit. Yet, underneath it all he cannot escape from the person he is inside. This is the writers main opinion. Despite all that Ali does to change himself, he cannot change who he is . His true personality is always there; under the surface.

His opinion is important because it is not just a reflection of Ali. It is a reflection of all society during this point in time. The 1970s are stark in contrast from the 1960s and yet under the surface no matter how different the people look on the outside they are still essentially the same within. They cannot change it despite the different faces they put up.

1630

Dick Schaap’s opinion is that some people are different when they are around people they don’t really know than they are around people who know them personally. This really shows a lot about a person if they’re really famous and all. The way Muhaamad Ali treats his best friend was pretty selfish because he was someone who has known him for awhile and to just have someone turn their back on you is rude and just dumb. Dick Schaap showed a lot of feeling about the way this whole situation turned out.

This opinion is important because it showed what kind of person Muhaamad Ali was because you can say you don’t really know the real person until you’ve spent time with him. It showed the feelings and outcomes that happened throughout the story. Opinions are really important because everyone has one and they’re not all the same.

1641

Muhammad Ali

The writer talked about the different troubles Muhammad had and how he had to face them. I really think that he was trying his best to show not only himself but the world that Muhammad is just the same as us. And as he grew up the writer explains he as just a kid trying to get his work done, but as he grew up even more he learned the different talents he had. Like able to get a girl and have money. In the end the writer seems to explain him as something big a different but also just someone who will always be the same.

The writer wrote this to the world. He wanted people to see Muhammad as he really is. He is a great fighter but he is just a human like the rest of us. He grew up like most of us and made it higher in life because he had a talent. But as for us we have talents and the only differences between him and us is that he shows off his talent.

1626

In the essay “Muhammad Ali Then and Now” by Dick Shaap, his opinion on Muhammad Ali is that he had been like a little kid when he was first beginning in his boxing but then when he began to go professional he grew up but yet stayed the same. His personality was different then it was when Shaap first met him but then he noticed how he still had that sameness to him. He was still the same guy but more mature and knowing of what went on around him along with his religious views.

This opinion is important because he realizes how this young boxer has grown up and yet he is the same. He notices and writes about this person that he knew. He is stating his opinions during the story in his point of view about Ali. His opinion is important because it gives it a new view on this boxer that makes you feel you get to know how he was. From when he didn’t know what cheesecake was all the way to his professional boxing days. He wanted to give the prospective on who Muhammad Ali really was instead of just this famous boxer. What his life and personality was like.

1638

The essay of Muhammad Ali by Dick Schaap explains how through all that has happened, Ali is still the same person. He still has the same character and personality even though he has been through so much and has got involved in different projects. Schaap says how Muhammad Ali is different yet so much the same and I believe he is referring to his character.

This opinion is important because Muhammad Ali has been through so much and it must have seemed like he changed drastically .Though this essay he reminds everyone Muhammad is still the same innocent kid who didn’t know what cheesecake was even though he acted as  a major part in the civil rights movement.

1621

In this story the narrarator describes, Muhhamad Ali, as a child that grows up. In the beginning Cassius Clay is a little child at first, he doesnt really know what he is able, and not able to do. He doesnt know what Cheesecake is, and he takes a reporter around in his car, and he asks him to stay with him because he is cool. But then slowly he starts to grow up, and Dick Schaap's opnion changes. He says that Ali was a good person, and that he grew up to be a awesome icon.
This opinion is very important because it is a growing up story. This is an american hero, and even a African American Idol. He was both because the fact that people thought that he would be an cheap boxer. He proved them all wrong, and they were shocked at what he had done in his lifetime. While he changed from a child into a full grown adult people had seen many changes, they had seen him mature.

1621

1342

“Muhammad Ali then and now” By Dick Schaap is a written account of the boxing legend from the author’s view. E.B.White says that it is the writers duty to put in their opinion in to their writing. Schaap applies this idea by putting in his opinion multiple times to Ali’s choices that he makes in the time that he was the champion. In parts of the essay schaap states his opinion like when Ali desides to befriend Malcolm X due to his radical views on using violence to achieve there freedom And the times Ali made his innocence known through his actions. Through the entire essay when Schaap brings up the champ he puts in his opinion about how he is doing and his choices that he makes. He makes it his job to state what he believes and he thinks about Ali.

E.B. White says that a writer has a duty to share his or her opinion at all times. Regardless of the opinion, it must be shared. Consider the essays, “Muhammad Ali Then and Now” by Dick Schaap, or “A New Kind of War” by Ernest Hemingway. Write a paragraph explaining what the writer’s opinion is, and another paragraph explaining why that particular opinion is important. Please email those responses to sweidenaar.americanlit2@blogger.com

It was an afternoon that the ship had wrecked and Stephen Crane had talked about it. He and the Captain had swam and they rowed the boat with oars to the shore. The shore was tough and the ship could not handle it so it had wrecked. When daylight was over they had heard mighty pounding from the engines. The cook was doubting that they were going to make it because many people kept asking the Captain if they were going to get out.

The people of Flint are kept from their best, richest, and most fulfilled life because they didn’t have a way to expand. These people wanted the American dream but didn’t have a way to reach it. After the General Motor factory closed down people could have gone straight back into school instead of laying around feeling bad for themselves. I don’t want to say it was their entire fault for being so poor but I bet most of those people could have gone back to school or find a different alternative of work.

The movie Roger and Me portrays a good view on how the human mind works and how fast society can spread a simply Idea or thought into reality. The idea that the American dream is so unachievable has become a reality for the people in Flint. The people have tweaked and altered the very nature of what the American dream actually is so much that it has become nothing more then a pot of gold that resides at the end of a rainbow. The people of Flint Michigan have locked the American dream up and lost the key. The thing that in cages their dreams is their very own mind and nothing more.

Roger Ebert’s response to the film would be anything but unoriginal. Most people in watching the film would say its more sad and depressing, the settings and events that take place make it relavent and true that this film is depressing but Roger thinks its more hilarious and more of a game in which one side looses but rises from their own ashes. He finds it ironic in a sense.

1337

Roger and Me

In this film the people were struggling to live the American dream. According to this film

it was because GM shut down and many people lost their jobs. There were two kinds of people in the film.

both were not living the American dream, but there were those who were working as hard as they could,

and there were those who sat back doing nothing wallowing in self pity and anger. For example, the lady

who took up killing rabbits for a living was at least trying to earn a living. Although was it the best job

she could have found? I think many of the people there were struggling because they wouldn’t move on

somewhere else. It’s understandable for someone to not want to leave their home, but when it comes to

living the “fullest life” sometimes you just have to move on. So to wrap up my thoughts; those who work

for the fullest life and still aren’t living it have an excuse, but those who aren’t trying their hardest have

no excuse.

1342

In the movie, The people that live in Flint, Michigan have their dreams crushed when the automotive factory shutdown leaving thousands of people jobless. The effect of this event really brought down people’s moral to where they just completely gave up. A lot of people lost their homes and a lot of businesses went out of business due to nobody having money. Some people tried to pick themselves back up by adapting to their situation like the lady that bludgeons bunnies to death just to sell meat to make some money. The city tried to encourage their citizens to pick themselves up by adding attractions and boosting their tourism which in the end failed miserably. I really think the city could’ve recovered, Jobs elsewhere and more opportunities at different companies and factories. Nobody can take away the American dream from anyone because you really make your life what it is.

1338

The people in the movie were not living to the fullest of the American dream. The American dream is to be able to have a good life with a good job and having the right to be free. In this movie the people were not always free, many people had good jobs until GM closed several of the plants. Many people had to get jobs somewhere else that did not pay as well as GM.

I think it was a bad idea that GM closed several plants so people lost their jobs. This movie was interesting but wasn’t funny, you shouldn’t laugh cause you wouldn’t laugh if you were to lose your job.

David Bensman did not like this movie. Because this movie he said mocks American culture.

Emily Dickinson’s poem “Success is counted sweetest” took the aspects of winning.  However, her reasons were that without failing, we wouldn’t know success.  This idea that she was a success had to prove that she knew what winning was.  She said in the poem, that without failure, success would not be known.  Emily Dickinson was truly a success, she knew the game, and she knew what ways to get the readers.

I agree with her ideas.  Because we would not know the standards of what needs to be done without failing.  So basically, failing is the only way to find of what you need to do to win.

1627

Emily Dickinson's poems presents a very realistic idea in "Success is Counted Sweetest." This poem is about winning--winning a battle. She speaks about the losing side and implies that they need to stuggle, but that they will eventually appreciate winning more than the winning side. This poem speaks a bunch about making mistakes, and then growing from those mistakes.

I have a positive opinion about this poem; I agree with what she is saying. When you fail, you need to get up and work hard. You need to put yourself on a journey toward success. No one wins by sitting around and waiting for great things to happen to them; to win you must work really hard. This will make you successful and qualify you as a winner.

1733

I choose “Because I could not stop for Death”. This poem show that death is not always a bad scary thing to be scared of but it can be romantic and kind. Like in the poem its like a guy taking out the girl on a date by picking her up in a carriage and taking her on a ride during a sun set and when she gets cold giving her a jacket to keep her warm. She parades this poem as a good thing and showing it could be a great experience with death. In this poem there was no dull moments from start to the end because its exciting for her and she was having a good time.

I agree with this poem because you do0nt know when death will come and don’t know when it will find you. And its not always a bad thing because it could be great and end the suffering of the world and can finally be at peace.  It doesn’t have to be scary because we can make it scary or we can make it a good thing and make it like Emily with her idea as death taking her out on a date. So I agree with her in the poem that death doesn’t always have to be a bad thing.

1640

Emily Dickinson’s poem “Because I Could Not Stop for DAATH!” was about how she wasn’t really scared of death. Death to her was nothing to fear. She explains in the story how Death came and picked her up and showed her around town and got down with her in her burial. She explains it all what they do, picks her up, drive on down the road to some school, pass some field, enjoy the sunset, and then she’s off to her grave.

I agree with her. Death isn’t really nothing to fear but fearing what comes after it like will there be a Heaven and Hell, can reincarnation be real, will we be in another different world, or will we even exist and be nothing. If there is a Heaven and Hell, the lover of life’s not a sinner, the ending is just a beginner, the closer you get to the meaning, the sooner you’ll know that you’re dreaming. I agree with what she says.

One of Emily Dickinsons poems that I am writing  about that has an essential truth is ‘’I heard a fly buzz when I died’’. The essential truth that Dickinson writes about in  this poem is death . The essential death is represented in this poem by the lady when she is dying has her death ruined by the buzzing of the fly. So what I think Dickinson is saying is that death should be peaceful and quite and not have anything annoying buzzing around you when you are dying.

What I think of Dickinsons truth of death in this poem is  that it would be nice to  have it completely quite but it  possibly can not  be completely quite when you are dying. There will always be something that will be making noise. So that is my thoughts on Emily Dickinsons truths.

1623

In success she says that you have to know failure, in order to know victory. “Success is counted sweetest by those who ne’er succeed”. This is other words means just what I said at the beginning, those who win should know how defeat feels. “Not one of all the purple Host who took the flag today can call the definition so clear of victory” Victory in other words is not so clear because the way to describe it is hard and the one person might describe it is not the way all interpret it. Some or not most are all interpreted with the usage of a not so victorious victory.

My opinion on this poem is that in a way I think that all of this is true. People always told me to be a good winner I have to be a good loser also and I have to know how to be approached with a lost in something. So this poem speaks truth.

1638

In Emily Dickinson’s poem, Because I could not stop for Death, she explains death as something to not be afraid of. The character in the poem is being taken out on a date by “death,” and they conclude their lovely evening, ending at a cemetery. She wants this poem to portray death as a fact of life and we should not fear it because it is the circle of life and everyone must go through it.

I think the idea of death is easy to put into words. It is easy for someone to say ‘don’t be afraid of death’ but when that moment comes, I believe everyone has that uncontrollable fear. This poem makes me wonder if Emily Dickinson was not afraid to die and when she did die, what did she feel? It could also just depend on how people die, if they were dying of old age, I would say death could be calm and easy rather than being murdered, which the fear would be unimaginable.

1634

In Emily Dickinson’s  poem Success is counted sweetest, she wrote about having to know success you must fail. She makes the point that the poem is about winning, and in the poem there is a battle scene. Her main point is that to know how sweet victory is you must know what it feels like to fail over and over again. Kind of like you don’t know how good water  is until you are thirsty. I think her point in this poem is to show that only a loser would think that winning is a wonderful thing, but a winner would only know how bitter-sweet it feels to win. People who don’t win put a high value on success, when people who win don’t put a high value on success.

I agree with this poem and like it a lot. At first I didn’t understand it, but after figuring out the explanation of it, I agree that success is almost like a luxury to some people. Only the people who have failed but come back to win understand that it is precious but only to a certain extent. I like that this poem can connect to a lot of people and in some way give them hope that even though they might be failing there is still time for them to have their own moment for success.

1625

I wrote my opinion on success is counted sweetest Emily Dickinson is telling us that one must fail to know success. She is saying that if one has never failed it is hard to appreciate winning. A person who lacks understands the importance of the thing he/she is missing. Losers know the meaning of winning a lot better than winners because they know the feeling of losing. One of the things that shape the overall impression is a battle scene.

I agree with what Emily Dickinson has to say because if someone has never lost winning won’t matter to him or her any more because they do not know the pain of losing. But if one knows how it feels to lose then they would want to win.  And winning is the most important thing they would want to accomplish in their life. And winning feels very good to them.

1633

In the poem, Success is Counted Sweetest, Emily Dickenson was trying to get the point across that those who succeed most in life dont appreciate it as much as those who dont. The winners take it for granted because they didnt suffer the emotions that come with a loss. This also applies to those who lack some luxuries of life. It is only those who lack something that can truely appreciate its worth because they know how it feels to live without it.
I really liked this poem. I could definitely relate to it because I know how it feels to suffer losing. Whether that be a family member, or even something as simple as a sporting event. I'm sure those starving kids in Africa experience this on a daily basis. We take for granted on a daily basis the abundance of food that we have. Those children on the other hand, would not cherish it like it's their last meal. I think we all need to take a step back and be thankful for all the things that we have been blessed with. Not very many people have it as good as we do.

1629

In Because I could not stop for death, Emily Dickinson portrays death in a beautiful way. In the poem she is taken on a date with death. They tour the town and enjoy the sunset. She is enjoying the last moments of life.

I see death in a similar way. It is calm and sweet. We reminisce of past times and enjoy our very last moments.

1635

Emily Dickinson focuses on the essential truth of death in Because I Could Not Stop for Death... and attacks this idea that we have to fear death. The language and plot of the poem is such that one does not get a bad feeling when death comes to the door. Instead, death is kind and what transpires as he comes to take her is more like a first date rather than this horrible experience. Death is not something to fear. Death while not necessarily welcome is accepted and met with no fear when it comes knocking at the door.

I agree with the author on the way we handle this essential truth. If people fear death chances are that they wont live their life in a fulfilling manner. People should focus on the present no matter what comes next. As Christians especially there is no reason to fear death because of our faith in what lies on the other side. Even without this assurance however, those who are not Christians must not be afraid of death either. It happens eventually to everyone and we cannot stop it. While it is maybe not joyfully welcomed in every case it should certainly be accepted.

1624

“Because I could not stop for death”

Okay, so in the story it was confusing to see what she getting to in the story. In other words the message of the story.  So from my point of view, it is that she is dead and death is I guess you could say nice to her. Everyone dies, everyone has one life. So death comes and goes each and everyday someone dies and you can not prevent it. The message that she is trying to get across to people is that death is not something to fear because it will all happen to each and every one of us someday.

This poem was by far one of the good poems. It was very well written, you can tell that the author put some time into this poem. I like how it explains that don’t fear death. That is something that everyone struggles with, so by just hearing this poem. People could be relaxed and realize that it is all okay.

1621

She says that in order to feel or know success, you must first fail. The first line that says, “Success is counted sweetest, by those who ne’er succeed.” She is saying that the people that have never succeeded, and that have failed many times in their life are the people that value the prize of succeeding. In this poem, she explains a battle scene, in where one side is trying to succeed, and the other is failing. In her lifetime, she may have known success and she may have known what it was to be the loser.

I really like this poem, maybe it’s because I am in sports, and you always need motivation. I like the fact that she is explaining a battle scene, and someone is working their butt off to get the win. It would have been really enjoyable, she was to explain both views of the person that succeeds, and the person that lost the battle.  I completely agree with what her poems meaning is. At some point in time, you fail, and you can take that as a sign of weakness or strength. It all depends on what you want to do. You can take that failure, and apply it to your life to make you a stronger person, or you can sit there with it and do absolutely nothing.

1630

In I heard a fly buzz when I died, Emily Dickinson talked about death. She sort of described how it would be I guess, and that death should be peaceful in a way. The fly represents noise, and she describes the room and how it should be still and quiet just like stillness in the air. She sort of describes how a fly can represent death in a way and you can hear it before you die then there’s just silence.

I agree with Emily Dickinson’s thoughts about death, because it should be quiet and peaceful before you die. Other annoying things like a fly can make the room or something not so peaceful when it’s the last few moments of your life that you want to have on Earth. A person’s last few moments on Earth are like keepsakes I guess you would say and they are meaningful to the people around you and they should be peaceful.

1639

I think she had a pretty good view about what she wanted to write about because the poem about success made it very clear that, that was what she was striving for. I think this poem also helped her reach her goal of success because it could’ve been looked as a source of motivation which also made it a very well written poem. Her view on success could’ve been interpreted in many different ways but it is  interpreted in a very clear view.

After you read this poem in class my mind was sort of bobbled and lost but after I reread the poem I finally realized the true meaning of the poem which was based on success. I like this poem because of the message and the optimistic vibe it sends to very person who has read this poem. As I said before this poem, could’ve been looked at as a source of motivation some source of inspiration. I also think this poem has a very solid pack of evidence to have a solid foundation to back it up.

Because I Could Not Stop For Death…

Emily Dickinson tells of her last moments before death and how she is taking away as if nothing is wrong. She tells of death as a person and how he stops for her in a carriage. He then takes her to the places she grew up and she goes back in time remembering the moments she spent at this school. As they drove on she thought more and more about where they were headed. Then a roof of a house in the ground appears to her and she wonders and figures out that this is her time to die. The moments spent on earth are great but death can be greater if you let nature take you.

This poem was very interesting to me because I never thought of death being so calm and relaxing. The ways she describes death is more of something you would look forward too. I mean I don’t know of many people who are actually looking forward to death as a good thing. She has a great way of making her poems sound beautiful on a most disturbing topic.  “Since then tis Centuries and yet Feels shorter than the Day I first surmised the Horses’ Heads Were toward Eternity..” I really believe that death should not be fear because it is a part of nature we must all go through sooner or later.

1622

Emily Dickinson’s poem, “Success is counted sweetest”, is a poem mainly about success. Dickinson believes success is appreciated more by those who rarely or just about never succeed. Winning or achieving success, after one has failed so many times, feels so much greater than someone who is constantly successful. The point, Dickinson is trying to get across is, to know success, you must fail. To truly know what success is, you must know failure.

I agree with Emily Dickinson. Success is not as sweet, if it constantly becomes a habit. I am not saying, success is bad or we shouldn’t succeed but I am saying that after failing so many times and after trying to achieve something for such a long time, it feels amazing to succeed and get it done. I also like the idea “To know success, you must fail” because to fully appreciate one’s success, one must know what it feels like to fail as well.

I Heard The Fly Buzz When I Died:

Emily Dickinson’s thoughts reflect in the way she wrote the poem and how the person dying is waiting for this moment of their life and expecting it to be the best moment. But as they are there on the edge of their life reflecting on how it all is good they hear a fly buzzing. That is the last thing they hear and now the entire moment of their death is ruined. She is saying that death is just another point of your life and it isn’t some big extravagant event that is going to be ruined by one little thing. She is saying don’t make death the biggest part of your life just to have it ruined by a tiny fly.

I don’t understand why anyone would want death to be the main event of their life. Why would you focus on death when you can live a good life and not have it ruined by a fly? I agree with Emily Dickinson’s thoughts in how she says that if a fly ruins the moment it wasn’t that big of a deal in the first place, because if it was supposed to be the best moment in life then not even a cannon could ruin it. Death is just another moment in life that happens and the fly just proves that it is.

1334

I Hear a Fly buzz, When I Died

Emily Dickenson’s poem “I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died”  explains her thoughts on the  essential message that maybe this moment before you die is not the climax of your life. She explained how the fly was an annoyance that took over this whole moment of life that was suppose to be all about herself. She thought this moment in life was the climax on determining who she was, which was an important person. In the end the fly was more important than herself. It was even more important than death, so dying isn’t something we should just focus on but we should focus on living.

Overall, I would have to agree with Emily Dickenson on this because we focus too much on the end that we don’t enjoy the little things of life that’s important to us. The fly represents us in a way that shows how not living your life to the fullest is an annoyance to us on our death bed. That’s just a way that most of us don’t want to die, which is with regret. So we should just start living now and enjoy life.

What does Emily Dickinson think about an essential truth?

In Emily Dickinson’s “Because I could not stop for Death,” the author conveys the idea that we should not be afraid of death, and rather view it as a simple transfer from our completed lives.  Through a series of words such as “kind,” “leisure,” and “civility,” all arranged in the poem, the idea that “death is a considerate and well-mannered happening,” brings across a peaceful viewpoint on death.

What do I think about this essential truth?

Although I can really appreciate the positive and bright attitude which Emily Dickinson’s “Because I could not stop for Death,” carries, I cannot say that I entirely agree with her underlying statement.  I believe that virtually all things are dependable and varying, being that some situations, attitudes, and truths apply to some peoples in any particular state of affairs whereas different situations, attitudes, and truths apply to others in the same particular state of affairs.  For your own self, in general, I believe that death should be viewed and experienced in many different ways.  For example, after living a [self] fulfilling life and securing your eternity, I believe that death is a “nice guy,” simply applying that passage way to what lies beyond our known lives.  I believe that in this case, it should be view such as it is in “Because I could not stop for Death.”  However, upon living an empty, unsatisfying, and unsure life, I believe that death, not necessarily should, but rather is viewed as a fearful event which dreaded.  Then, there is the instance where a someone’s life is shrouded in pain and suffering, causing one to view death as the relief, the freedom, the way out of misery.  In this case, death would be thought of as a good Samaritan, a deliverer, and a rescuer; death would be welcomed.  Therefore, I cannot say that I disagree with Emily Dickinson.  But,  I would say that I do not think that death should or is always to be view as a considering and courteous taxi driver.  I believe that it sometimes can and should be, and that those who do view it as that are better off in both life and death.  However, I also believe that it is often and reasonably view as a fearful, or on the other extreme, a welcomed event.

1342

Emily Dickinson described death in her poem Because I could not stop for death. She depicts death as this nice person that takes her on a joyful ride, a date. Death shows up at her door not as a scary image but as a nice person. Not once does she mention or hint that she is scared or sad about it although she knew that she is with death. She described death in such a way that you don’t fear it because it happens to everyone, everyone dies. They go on with their ride and see nice things, kids playing and scenery that is pleasing to the eye. At the end of the ride they go to her grave but she doesn’t describe it as a grave but more as a nice room.

I think she is right about death, that we shouldn’t fear it because it happens to everyone and every living thing that roams the earth. To me I see death as a release from all the pain and suffering that we go through on earth. Although people die in painful and often scary ways they are free from pain in the end. I also think that death is only a relief when you have accomplished what you desire in your heart and mind. I cant say that going on a date with death like described in the poem would be fun, honestly its quiet weird and creepy.

Emily Dickinson: Success

Emily Dickinson would talk about success like it were her life, she explained it in every natural way that she could. When she were to talk about death she was explaining it like she died and came back and spoke out and said not to be afraid of death but yet, most people die weak. Defeating a Victory can bring much more than a gift but a life full of  joyful memories and knowing you can complete anything and not just anything but the most hardest thing besides Victory. To me what she meant was to die not necessarily strong because most people die weak but to die where your soul can select what it can go after. Sometimes instead of having hope, most people see things a whole different way and that’s what I think Emily would talk about in her poems because she expressed the things she has been through during her life.

I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died

By: Emily Dickerson

In Emily Dickerson poem “I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died.” When Emily was on her death bed. Her thought was maybe she was going to die in a peaceful and silence death. But as we know a fly came in her room and she thought maybe it was the light to heaven. The fly actually gets everyone attention off Emily death. What Emily is trying to say or tell us is that death sometime cant be silence. A little fly can be an annoyance to death.

Yes, because I have seen movies that had annoying death. For example Zombie land where Bill Murry gets shot and tries to have his last breath. That lasts for a long time to have his last breath. In world yes there is a little fly that can be an annoyance to death. We don’t see or know it sometimes.

1333

Emily Dickenson believes that death isn’t too scary because it happens to everyone and people shouldn’t be afraid of it. In her poem Because I could not stop for Death, Emily compares death to a first date. She puts the image of a nice young man stopping at the house, knocking on the door, and picking her up to go out on a nice date in your head. In the poem they go on a joyful ride passed beautiful things like a school with children playing, fields of grazing grain, and they also see the setting sun which is peaceful. She also describes her grave as a beautiful house where the roof was scarcely visible, when she describes the roof of the house she is talking about her tombstone. In the end of her poem she never came back home, but she described her death as a date and she wasn’t afraid of it and actually enjoyed it.

Even though I’m not ready to die and don’t want anyone else to die I could agree with Emily Dickenson that we shouldn’t be afraid of death because everyone has to die. Some people might dislike death more than others and some could be more ready for it but they shouldn’t be afraid because everyone has to die. I don’t want to die but I don’t want to be afraid of death either because then I might be afraid to do daring things.

I Heard a Fly buzz- when I died-

No noise in the moment when the storm heaves, all silent except the stumbling buzz.

No more rain can fall from the eye, the storm had wrung them dry.

Take in one last breath, while the king has it’s visit in the mourning room.

There was an uncertain buzz between the light and me and could not see

I could agree in this depressing death poem, not only I had seen death but all of us had or will go through it, therefore we will feel what she feels. The spirit in the room is silent, so silent you can hear a fly buzz along with it, there is no emotion but confusion, not ready to lose life, but there stands the king ready to take you home.

1341

Success is counted sweetest

She thinks that if you succeed at every thing and never experience failure the satisfaction of success is not as enjoyable. She thinks that if someone fails all the time the taste of success is much sweeter when it is finally bestowed upon you. Emily thinks that people who fail all the time are more knowledgeable of success than those who succeed all the time. Emily thinks that the people how are failing all the time are taking risks but it is more profitable and gives more moral gain to ones self. So all in all she is saying its successful to fail.

I think that what she is saying is true in some aspects. To fail means you will learn from your mistakes and that your character will become stronger and the moral gain is priceless ect… but there is also a sweet taste to being successful as well. You will feel accomplished. You may not acknowledge how much being successful is worth, but you will know the feeling of being a victor and that to me is more a character builder than failing.

1338

Emily Dickinson’s belief on death is that she doesn’t think death is bad, and there is no need to fear death. In the poem Because I Could Not Stop for Death,  the describes death as a well dressed man taking you on a date. Usually when you go on you first date you more than likely going to be nervous then happy. Instead this date is a good happy date. She never returns back to her house, she dies and never returns.

I don’t like death at all. I have lost many good friends when they died. Death is a common thing most everyone fear’s. If you are a Christian you shouldn’t and there is no need to fear death, because if you are a true Christian you will live eternally in heaven. You can’t really put a value on death but it is so sad I say it can’t be worth 10$.

Because I Could Not Stop for Death

In Emily Dickinson’s “Because I Could not Stop for Death,” she poetically expresses her thoughts on death.

To Emily death is not something that should be feared. She displays this by portraying death as a man, a man that takes her out on a date.

He is not cruel and evil, but kind and gentle. He is respectful towards her and gently guides her to her grave. While most people think of darkness and gloom

When death is mentioned, Emily sees it as another part of life.

I personally agree with Emily Dickinson on the matter of death. It’s understandable for those who are not sure of where they are going, or are not

aware of the reality of Heaven and Hell that they should be afraid. For those who are sure of where they are going I believe it is the pain before their death that they fear rather than death itself. But for those who are saved by the blood of Christ there is a peace and I know this peace.

Death is merely a door into eternal paradise. In fact, death can even be something to look forward to at times. It is only something that will happen once in

every person’s life. Once I walk through that doorway of death I will finally be free of all that is not good in this world, and that is something to look forward to.

1332

In Emily Dickinson’s poem, I heard a Fly buzz- when I died-, she writes about death, one of life’s essential truths. She explains the unimportance of death in this poem. Emily Dickinson uses a fly to get this point across. Flies are very annoying, we usually try to ignore them when they are around, as humans we could care less about a fly. In Emily’s poem, the dying character focuses on the fly and its buzzing, not on the end of her life. Death isn’t bothering her, death is actually anticlimactic.

The end of someone’s life should be considered a big deal. A life shouldn’t end with a peculiar encounter with a fly, it should be way more than that. Death will be one of the most climatic events in someone’s life, especially to Christians, because our life in heaven will begin. It works for non-believers too, they will arrive at the most gruesome place ever. In a way, death is the gateway to eternal happiness, or eternal suffering, and that is a very big deal.
