1638

In Emily Dickinson’s poem, Because I could not stop for Death, she explains death as something to not be afraid of. The character in the poem is being taken out on a date by “death,” and they conclude their lovely evening, ending at a cemetery. She wants this poem to portray death as a fact of life and we should not fear it because it is the circle of life and everyone must go through it.

I think the idea of death is easy to put into words. It is easy for someone to say ‘don’t be afraid of death’ but when that moment comes, I believe everyone has that uncontrollable fear. This poem makes me wonder if Emily Dickinson was not afraid to die and when she did die, what did she feel? It could also just depend on how people die, if they were dying of old age, I would say death could be calm and easy rather than being murdered, which the fear would be unimaginable.
