Dick Schaap has the opinion that people and history do change over time, but share some similar characteristics like before. He shows this through Muhammad Ali who changed his motivation of becoming a top champ, and moved on to support the civil rights movement through his professional career to end segregation in the US.
This message is important and relevant since America has drastically changed since the time of Muhammad Ali, but some things of legacy still remain over the two score years that have passed. We see it's relevance in the fact that we have an African American president, yet still have some racial discrimination toward minorities like the event of immigration green cards or other loop holes that are constitutional to still discriminate. This would still show that attitude that Muhammad was fighting against way back in the 60s occurring still to this day.

  1. i agree with this that people and history do change but still have similiar characteristics. also that muhammad was a detemined fight to rise to the top and become champion. We still have discrimination but we are getting better at it.

I agree with this statement because American has changed over the time since Ali but still very much the same on the inside. Like Ali American changed on the outside by making laws against racism and making new laws to band other things. Yet we still are the same on the inside with people still being racism and having things against other people. When Ali started fighting he was not use to the riches an then two years later he was use to the riches but still that same kid deep down inside.

  3. This person makes it sound that Muhammad Ali single handedly changed America. Not everything back then was discriminated and not everybody was prejudice against black people. To make this post better would be to not generalize people so much.

I don't think Muhammad Ali had such a profound impact on the fight for Civil Rights as MLK or Malcolm X did. He supported it, sure, but he worried about his boxing, and his rise and retention of being a champion. Besides, he opted for whites and blacks to stay separate. As he pulled away from Schaap's wife's arm, standing by his pledge of "whites with whites, blacks with blacks."

  5. I agree with this statement because it shows that people can change but stay the same. Muhammad Ali was still the same fighter even though he tried helping end segregation. America may not have segregation but it doesn't change how people from being racist because it still happens today.1731

  6. I disagree with this response because Muhammad Ali attitude towards everything was selfish. He focused on nothing more than himself and his appearance towards others. He only changed to impress his audience and to become what society depicted him as. You could strengthen this response by not making Muhammad Ali a hero because he was not. He acted like a hero but in reality he was still a cocky immature person.

  8. 1621 I agree with this because Muhhamid Ali had changed over time, but in the end he still had the same characteristics. He was kind and generous. He had realized he was a Black Power movement icon, so he took it in his hands as a good thing. He wanetd to change the world, and he did in some extent. This

  9. I agree with this response because it did seem like Ali had to change himself in order to fit into the time period of that era. At first, yes he was very selfish and only concerned about himself, but then later on, he somewhat started fighting for civil rights. In a way, he helped the civil rights movement by using his fame to stand up for it.

  10. i agree with this post because it contains some factual information about Ali and the racial segregation about the 60's. However the person that posted this could have gone more into depth about how Ali and racial segregation changed.

  11. I agree because muhammad did change his personality. His purpose changed over time because before he did it just to win titles but after that he did it for something he supported
